An engagement session is one of my favorite parts of a couple’s journey toward marriage. It is a chance to slow down, be together, and capture the way you actually are with each other right now, in this season of your story. If you are feeling a little excited and a little nervous all at once, that is completely normal, and it is exactly where we begin.
Here is what the experience looks like with me, from the first few minutes to the moment you see your images for the first time.
Almost every couple arrives a little unsure. You might be wondering what to do with your hands, or whether you know how to pose. I want to take that worry off your plate completely. You do not need to know how to pose, and you do not need to perform for the camera. That part is my job.
Most couples start out a bit nervous and, within the first ten minutes or so, realize it feels far easier and more fun than they expected. Once you settle in, you stop thinking about the camera and start simply being together. That is when the real photos happen.
My sessions are built to feel effortless and natural. I will guide you the entire time with simple direction and gentle prompts, so you always know what to do next without anything feeling stiff or staged. We will walk, talk, laugh, and share quiet moments, and I will be capturing all of it as we go.
A typical session runs about an hour and a half, which gives us plenty of time to move through a few different spots and looks without ever feeling rushed. What matters most to me is connection, not perfection. When you focus on each other instead of the lens, the images take care of themselves.
You can expect most of your gallery to be those genuine, in between moments, the laughter and the closeness, with some classic, looking at the camera portraits woven in as well. The goal is a collection that feels like you, not like a catalog.
Light is everything, and timing is how we get the good stuff. I schedule sessions for the end of the day so we can shoot during golden hour, the last stretch of soft, warm light before the sun goes down. This is the glow you see in my work. It is flattering, romantic, and forgiving, and it is a world away from the harsh shadows of a midday shoot.
We often keep going into blue hour, the cooler, deeper light just after sunset, which is when some of my favorite frames come to life. Because this window is short and the light moves quickly, I always ask couples to arrive a few minutes early so we are ready to make the most of it. Trust me on the timing. Reading the light is something I have spent years learning, and I will always plan your session around the best of it.
We live in Washington, so the forecast can shift quickly. I want to put your mind at ease about that too. Light clouds often create the most beautiful, even light and the most dramatic skies, so an overcast forecast is rarely bad news. I keep an eye on conditions and will reach out the day before your session if we need to adjust anything. You never have to make that call on your own.
A little preparation goes a long way toward feeling confident and relaxed. Here is what I recommend.
For your outfits, think elevated, timeless, and true to you. Soft, neutral tones like ivory, cream, tan, and muted colors photograph beautifully, especially in warm evening light. Coordinate your looks so they complement each other rather than matching exactly. Flowy fabrics move wonderfully in the wind, and a second look can add nice variety if you would like to bring one.
A few more simple tips. Bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots, since many of my favorite locations involve a bit of a stroll. Pack a layer in case it gets breezy near the water. Hair and makeup are always encouraged, because feeling polished helps you feel confident in front of the camera, and an engagement session is a perfect trial run for your wedding day look. Feel free to bring any meaningful item or accessory you would like included in your photos.
In the days leading up to your session, take care of yourself. Get good rest, stay hydrated, and come ready to simply enjoy the time together. The more relaxed you are, the more the photos will reflect it.
Before we shoot, I will send you a questionnaire so I can get to know you as a couple. It asks about the things that actually shape your photos. How your story began and what first drew you together. What you want this season of your life to feel like when you look back on it years from now. How you express love in everyday life, whether you are playful, quiet, adventurous, or sentimental. The words that best describe your style. Any locations that are meaningful to you, and any must have shots you have your heart set on.
The more you share, the better. Your answers let me tailor the session to your story rather than running you through a one size fits all routine. The clearer we are on what you are hoping for, the better the experience and the images will be.
If you are unsure where to go, that is what I am here for. I am glad to suggest locations across the Kitsap Peninsula and Puget Sound that will match your style and the light we are after.
This is the part I love most, and it is what sets the experience apart. About two weeks after your session, we will meet for your Reveal and Ordering Session. This is when you see your images for the first time, together, and choose your favorites.
Rather than handing you a folder of files to scroll past and forget, I want to help you turn your favorite images into something lasting. At your reveal, we will talk through the prints, albums, and heirloom pieces that will keep these memories alive on your walls and in your hands for years to come. Your phone will eventually fail and your feed will keep scrolling, but a beautifully printed album is the kind of thing you hand down. That is the whole point of what I do. We are not making content. We are making the keepsakes your family will treasure.
You do not need to be photogenic for this to work. You just need to show up as yourselves, and I will take care of the rest. Your session is about your story, your connection, and creating something you will look back on for the rest of your life.
If you are ready to plan your engagement session, I would love to hear from you. Dates fill quickly during the busy season, so reaching out early is the best way to secure the time that works for you. Consultations are always free.
