After years of photographing engagements, weddings, and portraits across the Kitsap Peninsula and the greater Puget Sound, I have learned that location is never just a backdrop. It is part of your story. The right spot at the right hour does half the work before I ever lift the camera, and knowing exactly where to stand when the light drops is the part I love most.
These are the places I return to again and again. Every one of them is somewhere I have actually photographed couples, so I know the parking, the walk in, the best light, and the little corners most people walk right past. If you are dreaming about your engagement session or planning where to take your wedding portraits, here is where I would point you first.
Chambers Bay is one of my absolute favorite places to photograph a couple at sunset. The open grass ridges roll down toward Puget Sound, and when the evening light goes gold across the water, the whole place feels cinematic. There is room to walk, room to breathe, and a sense of scale that makes even a quiet moment feel like part of something bigger.
It does involve some walking and a bit of elevation, so I always tell couples to bring comfortable shoes for between spots. We move around the site to chase the best light, starting on the ridge during golden hour and finishing near the water as the sky deepens into blue hour. If you want soft, glowing, wide open images with the Sound behind you, this is the one.
Scenic Beach is where I send couples who want something a little quieter and more tucked away. Right here in Kitsap County, it gives you weathered driftwood, a calm shoreline, and the Olympic Mountains rising across Hood Canal. In the early morning the light is soft and cool and the beach is often nearly empty, which makes for an intimate, unhurried session.
There is a short walk in from the parking area, and the mood here is gentle rather than dramatic. Morning sessions in particular have a stillness to them that is hard to find anywhere else. If you love the idea of the two of you, the water, and the mountains with almost no one around, Scenic Beach delivers every time.
Fort Casey is worth every mile of the drive and the ferry ride to get there. The historic concrete bunkers, the tall coastal grass, the lighthouse, and the big open sky give this location a bold, adventurous, editorial feel you cannot fake. The wind off the water is part of the character here, and I lean into it. A dress moving in a coastal breeze along the bunker line is one of my favorite things to photograph.
This is one of the windier and more exposed spots I shoot, so I always suggest a layer for between sets and we keep an eye on the light as the sun drops toward the sea. For couples who want their photos to feel cinematic and a little untamed, Fort Casey is a signature location for me.
Close to home and often overlooked, Manchester State Park is a hidden gem on the Kitsap side of Rich Passage. You get a beautiful mix of forest and shoreline, plus the old brick battery structure that adds texture and history to a session. It is the kind of place where we can move from soft, shaded green light under the trees to open water in just a few minutes of walking.
Because it is quieter and less crowded than the bigger destinations, Manchester is a wonderful choice for couples who want variety in their gallery without traveling far. It is one of the easiest locations to reach from the Bremerton and Port Orchard area, which makes it a favorite for shorter sessions and last light evenings..
Just across the Narrows, the Gig Harbor waterfront leans straight into the maritime feeling that Nautical Moments is built around. Working boats, the harbor, the historic net sheds, and the water give us a charming, storybook backdrop with real Puget Sound character. There is something timeless about a couple walking the harbor as the light turns warm in the evening.
The harbor town setting also means there is plenty of texture to work with, from docks and pilings to quiet side streets, so we can shift the look and feel several times within one session. If you want photos that feel rooted in this stretch of the Sound, the Gig Harbor waterfront is a beautiful place to start.
Every one of these locations offers something different. Chambers Bay gives you sweeping golden hour and open water. Scenic Beach gives you quiet mornings and mountain light. Fort Casey gives you drama and adventure. Manchester gives you forest and shoreline close to home. Gig Harbor gives you that classic maritime charm. There is no wrong answer here. There is only the right one for the two of you, and helping you find it is part of what I do.
When we talk before your session, I will ask about your style, your comfort level, and the feeling you want to remember, and then I will guide you to the location and the light that match your story. You do not need to know how to pose or what to do. That part is my job. Your job is simply to show up as yourselves.
If you are ready to plan your engagement session or wedding portraits somewhere on this list, or somewhere new you have been dreaming about, I would love to hear from you. Consultations are always free, and there is no better time than now to get your date on the calendar.
