The roses give you gentle color that flatters every skin tone, and the manicured walkways and gazebo give us natural places to pose without it feeling stiff. The surrounding 760-acre Point Defiance Park also opens up old-growth forest, the Pagoda, and waterfront overlooks if you want more than one look in a single session.
Where you’ll stand & best light: the garden faces beautifully in the late afternoon, we aim for the two hours before sunset so the light is warm and there are no harsh shadows. I’ll place you along the walkways or framed in the gazebo and guide every step.
Parking & access: free parking near the garden, paved and mostly flat paths (good for grandparents and little ones), and restrooms in the park.
Ruston Way Waterfront at Sunset
Best for: couples and families who want that glowing, golden-hour, water-behind-you look.
Ruston Way is Tacoma’s classic sunset stretch. When the sun drops over Puget Sound, the sky lights up and we get warm, flattering light with the water as your backdrop. There are piers, little beaches, and grassy parks all along the path, so we can move between a few looks without much walking.
Where you’ll stand & best light: this is a golden-hour spot, plan it for the last hour before sunset. We’ll use the shoreline and piers to put the light behind you for that soft glow, and I’ll prompt you into easy, natural movement so it never feels posed.
Parking & access: free street and lot parking along the waterfront, flat paved walking path, restrooms at the parks.
Chambers Bay
Best for: couples and seniors who want big, dramatic, open scenery.
Chambers Bay, just south of Tacoma in University Place, is where I photographed Madison’s sunset engagement session. The rolling hills, the iconic footbridge, and the sweeping views of the Sound make for bold, editorial-feeling portraits. It’s wide and open, so it’s a great contrast to the soft garden look.
Where you’ll stand & best light: sunset is magic here, Madison’s session was an 8pm shoot for exactly that reason. We’ll use the trails and the bridge for depth, with the Sound glowing behind you.
Parking, access & permits: this is a Pierce County park with paved trails and some hills, so wear comfortable shoes. Portrait sessions here can require a photo permit, I hold Pierce County Parks and Washington State Parks permits and handle that paperwork for you, so you never have to think about it.
Wright Park & the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory (Your Rain Plan)
Best for: families and seniors, and anyone booking in our wetter months.
This is the spot the scenery lists never tell you about. Wright Park is a 27-acre arboretum with more than 600 tree species, a pond, and winding paths that make beautiful natural backdrops. But the real secret is the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory inside it, a historic glass greenhouse full of tropical plants and seasonal blooms. If it’s pouring (this is the PNW, after all), we move inside and still get warm, colorful, gorgeous portraits. Every session I plan has a rain plan, and in Tacoma, this is it.
Where you’ll stand & best light: the conservatory gives soft, even light all day, so it’s flexible on timing. In the park itself, late afternoon under the big trees is dreamy.

Downtown Tacoma: Urban Looks for Seniors & Branding
Best for: seniors who want an editorial, city vibe, and professionals needing branding or headshots.
Downtown gives us a completely different mood, historic architecture, brick, glass, and color. A few spots I love: the Chihuly Bridge of Glass for color and texture, the historic Union Station rotunda for old-world drama, and Stadium High School’s striking facade for a classic senior look. Mixing one downtown look into a senior session is a great way to get range: nature plus city in the same gallery.
Where you’ll stand & best light: downtown’s tall buildings create lovely open shade, so we have more flexibility on time of day. Overcast PNW days actually work in our favor here.
Parking & access: metered street and garage parking; the area is walkable so we can hit a few looks on foot.
The Best Time of Day (and Year) to Shoot in Tacoma
Timing changes everything. For outdoor sessions, I plan around the two hours before sunset, that golden-hour light is soft, warm, and flattering, and it keeps harsh midday shadows off your face. If we need a midday session, we lean on open shade (Wright Park’s trees, downtown’s tall buildings) or move into the conservatory.
Season matters too. Late spring and summer bring lush greenery and blooming roses. Fall gives us rich, warm tones that photograph beautifully, and it’s our busiest portrait season, so it books up early. Winter can be quiet and lovely, and with the conservatory as a backup, rain is never a reason to cancel.
