Everyone asks about Chambers Bay and Point Defiance, and they earn the hype. But Belfair State Park, tucked at the bottom of the Hood Canal about twenty minutes from Bremerton, quietly packs five completely different backdrops into one walkable loop: a giant maple with a golden field behind it, a shoreline stacked with sculptural driftwood, a gravel creek that runs right into the canal, thickets of tall yellow wildflowers in late summer, and a west facing beach that catches real sunset color over the water. One parking lot, five sets. That variety is exactly what a senior session wants, because every outfit gets its own world.
Timing note for planners: this was a Sunday evening session starting about two hours before sunset. The park quiets down after dinner time, the light goes soft and warm, and the tide flats turn to glass. The shoreline at Belfair is stacked with driftwood logs the size of couches, and they are the best natural posing furniture in Mason County. Liv could sit, lean, and perch without a single stiff pose, and the estuary stretched out behind her doing all the background work. From there we followed the gravel bed of Mission Creek into the shade, which gave us a totally different feel, cooler light and green summer foliage, without walking more than five minutes.
Late July through August, the park edges fill with tall yellow wildflowers, and we used them hard. Some frames have Liv holding a stem, some have her tucked into the thicket in her black dress, and one of my favorites is her smelling the flowers with her eyes closed like the world had no schedule that evening. Seniors always worry that flower photos will feel cheesy. They do not, as long as you interact with the flowers instead of standing next to them like a rental car.
Can you bring your truck to your senior session?
Yes, and if it matters to you, you absolutely should. Liv’s silver Silverado joined for the last set and instantly became the anchor of the most personal images of the night. We shot her leaning out the driver window, sitting on the tailgate in her boots, and framed in the side mirror. A vehicle you love is not a prop, it is biography. For the finale we borrowed a trick from the fashion world and laid a mirror flat on the pavement. Liv crouched over it at dusk and the mirror caught her reflection against the evening sky, a completely different image than anything else in the gallery. Getting to Belfair State Park, and what it costs to shoot there
The park sits on the North Shore of the lower Hood Canal along State Route 300, about ten minutes past downtown Belfair and roughly twenty five minutes from Bremerton. From Gig Harbor or Port Orchard, take WA 16 to WA 3 and follow the water; the drive along the canal is a preview of the session. It is an easy trip for families anywhere on the Kitsap Peninsula, and far closer than most people guess.
Two practical notes. First, this is a Washington State Park, so each vehicle needs a Discover Pass, ten dollars for the day or forty five for the year, and the annual pass covers every state park in Washington including Manchester and Scenic Beach, which are both on my regular senior rotation. Second, professional photography in state parks requires a photographer permit, and that is already handled.
