Where I Hide During a Surprise Proposal

MAN PROPOSING TO GIRLFRIEND AT MANCHESTER STATE PARK.

People ask what I do for a living, and some days the honest answer is that I hide near driftwood with a camera and wait for someone to cry happy tears.

Fall is proposal season in the PNW, so if you are planning one, here is what actually matters. Pick golden hour, because the water does its best work then. Check the tide, because on a Puget Sound beach the tide decides how much beach you get. Agree on an exact spot with your photographer ahead of time, then get your person there naturally. A simple plan beats a clever one, because a complicated story is how surprises fall apart. And keep it off the group chat. Someone always talks.

Manchester State Park even has old bunkers that were basically built for sneaking around, which is why it is one of my favorite places to disappear with a camera.

You get one take at this moment. My job is to make sure it is caught, and then to stay hidden until the ring is on.
