When you scroll through family galleries online, you might notice something funny. We live through four full seasons, but almost every photo looks like the same warm evening in early fall. Golden light, a few turning leaves, everybody in cozy sweaters. It is as if the calendar skips from September straight to the next September.

That is not because photographers run out of ideas. Some months really do give us better light, kinder weather, and a little less chaos for families trying to schedule a session. But those pictures do not tell the whole story, and they do not fit every family.

Real life is full of real logistics. Sports tryouts, school concerts, toddler nap windows, and sometimes the quiet wish to capture a season before it changes or to honor someone who mattered. So as you think about when to book your family session, the honest answer is this. The best time of year for family photos is as much about your actual life as it is about the weather.

Here is how I think about it for families here in Kitsap County and across Western Washington.

Why Fall Feels Like THE Family Photo Season

Let us talk about the pumpkin spice elephant in the room. Every year the September and October weekends fill up first, and feeds fill with families in warm tones surrounded by a little color. There is a good reason for it. Early fall gives us softer evening light, cooler and more comfortable air, and fewer of the distractions that come with a packed summer.

But there is a sneakier reason too. Holiday cards and gifts. If you want images on the mantel, in the mailbox, or printed for grandparents in December, you need photos finished by early November. That deadline turns early fall into a rush, which makes spring and summer feel like off months even when they are beautiful. The truth is the best window for your family might not match everyone else’s, especially once you factor in ages, bedtimes, and personalities.

The Western Washington Reality

Here is something a lot of the online advice misses. In the Pacific Northwest our most reliable outdoor window is actually summer into early fall, roughly July through September, because that is when our skies are clearest and the rain finally backs off. Spring is lush and green but wet. Fall brings gorgeous light and the first color, but October also brings the return of our rain.

Our fall color looks different here too. We do not get the wall to wall blaze of the Midwest. We get pockets of warm maples set against evergreen, which reads beautifully in a frame when we plan the location well. Manchester State Park near Port Orchard, for example, leans into a soft palette of terracotta and deep green in October that photographs wonderfully for families.

So the question is not only which month is prettiest. It is which month is reliable, comfortable, and a fit for your family’s day to day.

Timing Around Your Kids, Not Instagram

Choosing when to shoot is not just about pretty light. The ages and routines of your kids play a huge role, and our long northern summers make this matter even more than it does elsewhere.

If you have older kids, teens, or college age young adults, summer and early fall evening sessions are a breeze. Everyone is awake, flexible, and happy to roll with a later start. Work and activity schedules are your only real hurdle, and a little planning solves that.

If you have toddlers, preschoolers, or little ones under seven, timing is everything. Young kids melt down when a session runs into dinner or bedtime, and here in the Puget Sound region our best evening light in June and July does not arrive until well after 8:00 PM. For families who live and die by the nap and bedtime routine, late summer and early fall are often kinder, because the light comes earlier in the evening. Instead of picking a date off a trend, ask yourself a simpler question. When are my kids actually at their happiest?

Month by Month, May Through October

May. Spring is in full swing, with lush green backdrops and mild temperatures. Flowers add real detail. The trade offs are unpredictable rain and a late start time, since the good light does not arrive until after 7:00 PM. Great for fresh scenery and quieter locations. Harder for early sleepers.

June. School lets out and the days stretch long, with the best light arriving close to 8:00 PM or later. Lovely soft evenings and relaxed schedules, but a tough call for little ones who need an early bedtime. Summer rain can still surprise us.

July. Our most dependable warm month, with dry skies and rich green landscapes. The catch is that the light does not turn golden until quite late, so July suits families with older kids or happy night owls. Bring bug spray for shadier spots.

August. Many of July’s strengths, with the light arriving a touch earlier as the month goes on. Warm evenings, beautiful golden tones, and a slightly more manageable start time. The main hurdles are vacation schedules and back to school prep.

September. This is when family requests explode, and for good reason. September blends late summer warmth with the first hints of fall, and the light moves back into a friendlier evening window. Comfortable air, fewer bugs, and everyone back in town after summer travel. Expect high demand, so book ahead.

October. Peak color for our region, crisp air, and that soft light we love, with the earliest and most family friendly start times of the season. The catches are simple. October books up fast, our rain returns, and the window for holiday card turnaround is short. Reserve early if your heart is set on fall.

Real Golden Hour Start Times for Kitsap

One of the most overlooked parts of planning is what time your session will actually begin. Golden hour, the soft glowing light in the last hour before sunset, is what makes family photos feel magical. But golden hour does not follow the school calendar, and here in the Puget Sound region the swing across the year is dramatic.

These are approximate evening session start times for our area, based on local sunset timing:

• May: around 7:15 to 7:45 PM
• June: around 7:45 to 8:00 PM
• July: around 7:30 to 8:00 PM
• August: around 6:45 to 7:30 PM
• September: around 6:00 to 6:40 PM
• October: around 5:00 to 5:40 PM

If your child goes to bed at 7:30, a June or July evening session can be a recipe for tears, or at best a very quick shoot. For older kids and adults, that same late light makes for a relaxed and playful evening. What About the Off Season

From November through April our outdoor light gets short and our weather gets wet and grey, so the classic golden hour park session is harder to pull off. That does not mean your family story has to wait until spring. There are still good options for winter birthdays, a new baby at home, or those in between seasons, and a covered or indoor setting can take the weather out of the equation entirely.

If you are hoping for fall images or holiday cards, the real takeaway is to plan ahead. The dry season dates and the fall weekends go first, so reaching out early is the single best thing you can do.

For teens and grown kids, our long summer evenings are magical. For families with toddlers or a holiday card deadline, September and October are ideal, but those spots fill quickly. If your calendar is already packed, May can be a quieter and just as beautiful choice.
